Core Principles

EVM (Error Vector Magnitude)

EVM (%) = (P_error / P_reference)^0.5 × 100% EVM (dB) = 10·log₁₀(P_error / P_reference) EVM quantifies the deviation between measured and ideal constellation points. 5G NR requirements vary by modulation order (e.g., QPSK: <17.5%, 256QAM: <3.5% per 3GPP TS 38.101). Ref: 3GPP TS 38.101-1 §6.4.2

ACLR (Adjacent Channel Leakage Ratio)

ACLR (dB) = 10·log₁₀(P_main / P_adjacent) Measures power leakage into adjacent channels. 5G NR typically requires ACLR > 45 dB for UE. Lower ACLR causes interference to neighboring channels. Ref: 3GPP TS 38.101-1 §6.5.2

Phase Noise

L(f) = 10·log₁₀(P_sideband / P_carrier) [dBc/Hz] Phase noise at offset f from carrier degrades EVM and limits demodulation of high-order modulation (256QAM/1024QAM). Integrated phase noise directly impacts constellation spreading. Ref: 3GPP TS 38.104 §9.6

S-Parameters & Matching

Return Loss (dB) = -20·log₁₀|S11| Insertion Loss (dB) = -20·log₁₀|S21| VSWR = (1 + |Γ|) / (1 - |Γ|) S11 (input reflection) indicates impedance match; S21 (forward transmission) indicates gain/loss. Poor matching causes power loss and signal distortion. Ref: IEEE Std 1785.1-2012
